And the best thing about it: the tree doesn't have to die for the harvest. The robust bark becomes thicker every year. It can reach a thickness of up to 25 centimeters and acts like a protective coat that shields the tree from heat, cold and forest fires. Cork is harvested by peeling off the bark. It then takes around ten years before the tree can be harvested again.
